No será un récord pero sí un buen average. Ben Jones ha viajado más de 60 veces a Cuba y no lo ha hecho como un turista más. En sus visitas no se ha abandonado a la soledad de una habitación perdida en un hotel. Tampoco ha mirado la Isla desde la altura de esos ómnibus que recorren La Habana lejos del asfalto y, mucho menos, se ha dejado eclipsar por el brillo idílico de las playas que ocupan las portadas de revistas. Lo de Ben Jones ha sido otra cosa. Por eso, quizás, se ha dedicado a escudriñar en las raíces de la identidad cubana, en su historia, en el palpitar de sus expresiones más raigales.

Ben Jones es un artista estadounidense y acaba de aterrizar nuevamente en Cuba. Viene ahora para promover una exposición que nace de su incesante exploración en esa diversidad de relatos posibles de la Isla y de su interés en establecer diálogos culturales entre Estados Uni­dos y Cuba. Se trata de la muestra La abstracción y los artistas afronorteamericanos, que se exhibirá desde el 1ro. de agosto en el edificio de Arte Uni­versal, del Museo Na­cio­nal de Bellas Artes de Cuba (MNBA).

La serie comprende 38 obras de nueve artistas estadounidenses cu­yo prestigio tiene una sombra muy larga en el arte contemporáneo y sus obras, enmarcadas dentro de las técnicas de la abstracción, evidencian un fuerte componente de indagación y de reivindicación de las raíces africanas. Ben Jones lo explica. “El vínculo que los artistas de ambos países estamos estableciendo es muy fuerte y espero que nuestra obra ayude a acercar cada vez más a nuestros pueblos porque no somos tan distintos, sobre todo, en el reconocimiento de esa huella que África sembró en nosotros. En Estados Unidos hay muchos creadores, conscientes como yo de la fuerza que tiene la cultura negra en la Isla. Por eso venimos a beber de ella, de sus referentes”.

La muestra es una señal de que, co­mo señaló Jones, hay muchos crea­­­dores estadounidenses que quie­ren visitar la Isla y trabajar con los cubanos. Por eso la delegación compuesta por más de 80 personalidades no está integrada solamente por artistas de la abstracción. Tam­bién se cuentan directores de museos, coleccionistas, académicos, curadores, músicos y creadores de las artes vi­suales que visitarán diversos espacios como la Academia de San Ale­jan­dro, la Casa de África y a la Aso­ciación Yoruba de Cuba.

En la exposición, dedicada a la poeta y activista política estadounidense Jayne Cortez, aparecen autores como Víctor Davson, Howar­dena Pindell y Nanette Carter. Sus obras tejen una amplia red que retoma la herencia africana, la asume como una identidad propia ante el mundo, la despoja de estereotipos y la coloca como una inagotable fuente de riqueza en el centro de la cultura estadounidense, con un discurso anticolonialista en el que convergen muchas voces, muchas miradas y diferentes estéticas.

No es casual, entonces, que la exposición pondere a Jayne Cortez. Su nombre se encuentra estrechamente ligado a la búsqueda de la libertad y a la defensa de los derechos de los afronorteamericanos. Ese es el camino que siguen obras suyas como Taking the blues back home (1996), Maintain Control (1986), Everywhere drums (1990) y Cheerful and optimistic (1994), que unen los lenguajes de la poesía más experimental y la música. Jay­ne tampoco es una desconocida en Cuba. Todo lo contrario. Du­rante sus visitas a nuestro país forjó una gran amistad con la escritora cubana Nancy Morejón, manifestó su admiración por Nicolás Guillén y fue jurado del Premio Casa de las Américas.

Ben Jones es un tipo de piel cobriza, delgado, muy comunicativo y luce un pañuelo en la cabeza con alegorías a la cultura de Ja­maica. Quizás usted se lo encuentre por las calles o por algún que otro rincón de La Habana. Le será fácil reconocerlo. No lo verá con la expresión de un turista deslumbrado guardando velozmente recuerdos en su cámara. Lo verá, sin duda, con la mirada profunda de un hombre convencido de que el arte puede trazar puentes y que sabe que para tener una idea certera de un país, se debe conversar con su gente, indagar en sus paisajes más recónditos, y conocer a fondo sus expresiones culturales más genuinas, un propósito al que se ha dedicado durante sus más de 60 viajes a Cuba. Y quizás no sea un récord, pero sí un buen average.
